TLDR Botulinum toxin is effectively used to treat various painful conditions and its therapeutic uses are growing.
Botulinum toxin (BoNT), one of the most toxic substances known to man, is used as an effective treatment for many diseases due to its unique mechanism of action. It has found particular use as a long-acting analgesic due to its ability to inhibit the exocytosis of pain neuropeptides, including CGRP, substance P, and modulate the expression of pain-related receptors such as TRPV1, NMDA, AMPA, P2X3. BoNT injections are effective in treating many painful conditions: diabetic neuropathy, chronic migraine, spinal cord injuries. The clinical applications of botulinum toxin are expanding each year. Currently, there are at least 8 commercially available botulinum toxin types A and B preparations, the most recognizable of which are Botox, Dysport, and MyoBloc/NeuroBloc. Future research should be aimed at improving the safety profile and increasing the effectiveness of botulinum toxin-based drugs. New types of botulinum toxin obtained through molecular engineering will significantly increase its therapeutic effectiveness.
