January 2007 in “UNIFESP Institutional Repository (Universidade Federal de São Paulo)” This study investigated the relationship between psychiatric diagnoses and the overuse of symptomatic medication in 72 chronic migraine patients. It found that 69% of these patients overused medication, and psychiatric disorders, specifically anxiety and mood disorders, were significant factors associated with this overuse (p=0.003 and p=0.045, respectively). Other factors like age, sex, education, BMI, medication type, headache characteristics, and caffeine use were not statistically significant. The study concluded that addressing psychiatric comorbidities is crucial in treating chronic migraine patients who overuse medication, suggesting that preventive measures for anxiety and depression could help reduce medication overuse.
