TLDR Pea sprout extract is safe and effectively reduces hair loss.
In a study by Grothe, Wandrey, and Schuerch from 2019, pea sprout extract was investigated for its potential to treat hair loss. The research included a gene expression analysis with 10 volunteers and a pilot nutrition intervention study with 21 volunteers. The gene expression analysis revealed that applying 2% pea sprout extract topically increased the expression of hair growth-related genes FGF7 and noggin by 56% and 85%, respectively. The nutrition intervention study showed that consuming 100 mg of pea sprout extract daily for 8 weeks significantly reduced hair loss within 28 days, with 95% of participants experiencing a reduction in hair loss and 86% reporting a reduction after the full 8 weeks. No adverse events were reported, leading to the conclusion that pea sprout extract is a safe and effective treatment for reducing hair loss.
