TLDR Cidea is essential for proper lipid storage and secretion in sebaceous glands, affecting skin and hair health.
The study demonstrated that Cidea played a crucial role in lipid storage and secretion in sebaceous glands of both mice and humans. Cidea-deficient mice exhibited dry hair, hair loss, and reduced skin surface lipids, leading to impaired water repulsion and thermoregulation. Overexpression of Cidea in human sebocytes increased lipid storage and droplet size, while its deficiency resulted in smaller lipid droplets and reduced sebum secretion. Cidea expression in human sebaceous glands was positively correlated with sebum secretion, highlighting its significance in maintaining skin and hair health. These findings suggested that Cidea could be a potential therapeutic target for treating sebaceous gland-related conditions like acne.
