TLDR FA2H is essential for normal fur and sebum production in mice.
The study found that fatty acid 2-hydroxylase (FA2H) was crucial for normal fur development and sebum production in mice. FA2H was specifically expressed in sebaceous glands and necessary for synthesizing certain lipids. Mice lacking FA2H had enlarged sebaceous glands, altered sebum composition, and experienced hair loss during the telogen phase due to blocked hair canals. This highlighted the role of FA2H in maintaining hair follicle homeostasis and the importance of specific lipids produced by sebaceous glands.
