Catalytic Antibodies in Normal and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

TLDR Catalytic antibodies are early indicators and active participants in the development of systemic lupus erythematosus.
The study demonstrated that catalytic antibodies (abzymes) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) exhibited diverse enzymatic activities, including DNase, RNase, and protease functions, which were not present in healthy individuals. These abzymes were cytotoxic and played a significant role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases by hydrolyzing peptides, proteins, DNA, RNA, and oligosaccharides. The research highlighted the complexity and heterogeneity of abzymes, their metal ion dependencies, and their potential negative impact on disease progression. The findings suggested that abzymes could be critical in understanding autoimmune disease mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
