Case Report: A Virilizing Adrenal Oncocytoma

    TLDR A woman's symptoms of increased body hair and testosterone were caused by a rare adrenal tumor, which was removed successfully.
    In 2021, a 45-year-old woman and a 64-year-old woman were diagnosed with virilizing adrenal oncocytomas, rare tumors that cause symptoms like excessive hair growth, hair loss, and voice deepening due to androgen hypersecretion. Both patients underwent successful adrenalectomies, with their symptoms improving post-surgery. The 64-year-old woman's 9 cm adrenal mass was identified as a borderline adrenocortical oncocytoma, and she showed no signs of recurrence two years post-surgery. The report emphasized the importance of early detection and surgical intervention, and suggested that adrenal oncocytomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of virilizing syndromes. Despite the rarity of these tumors and lack of established postoperative guidelines, benign adrenal tumors and borderline oncocytomas have shown excellent prognosis, with malignant tumor survival exceeding that of adrenal cortical carcinomas.
