TLDR Alopecia areata patients don't have increased atherosclerosis risk, but may have higher cardiovascular risk due to smoking, blood sugar, and blood pressure.
This study investigated the potential increase in atherosclerosis risk among alopecia areata (AA) patients by measuring carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and other cardiovascular risk factors. The study included 61 AA patients and 61 healthy controls. Results showed no significant difference in CIMT between the two groups, indicating that subclinical atherosclerosis was not increased in AA patients. However, AA patients had significantly higher smoking rates, fasting blood glucose levels, and diastolic blood pressure compared to healthy controls, suggesting a potential cardiovascular risk that requires further investigation.
