Results of Complete Blood Cell Count, Fasting Blood Sugar, Rheumatoid Factor, C-Reactive Protein, Antinuclear Antibody, and Thyroid Function Tests in Patients with Alopecia Areata
TLDR Many patients with Alopecia Areata have underlying autoimmune disorders, especially thyroid issues.
This study from 2011 evaluated 58 patients with Alopecia Areata (AA) to assess the presence of autoimmune disorders through various serum laboratory tests. The results indicated that a significant portion of the patients had underlying autoimmune conditions, with 8.6% showing thyroid dysfunction, 6.9% with diabetes mellitus, 8.6% with anemia, 22.4% with positive antinuclear antibody (ANA), and 15.5% with a positive rheumatoid factor. The findings suggested that patients with AA might benefit from screening for autoimmune disorders, particularly thyroid dysfunction, as these conditions were more prevalent compared to the normal population.
