TLDR Premature hair greying may indicate a higher risk of metabolic problems.
The study conducted on 1,929 young healthy subjects found that premature hair greying (PHG) was significantly associated with metabolic risk factors. The PHG group, which included 704 participants, showed higher waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar levels, and lower HDL cholesterol compared to those without PHG. The odds of having PHG were 1.725 times higher in individuals with two or more metabolic risk factors, even after adjusting for confounding factors. The research suggests that PHG may serve as a clinical indicator for metabolic syndrome risk, although its findings are limited by its cross-sectional nature and the homogeneous Korean ethnicity of the participants. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings in a broader population.
