TLDR Cannabis has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, but more research is needed on its effects on plant and aquatic animal pathogens.
This systematic review examines the metabolomic profile and anti-pathogenic properties of Cannabis species, emphasizing their potential medicinal benefits and identifying research gaps. Cannabis, with over 600 compounds including 180 cannabinoids, shows promise in antimicrobial activities against multidrug-resistant bacteria, fungi, and viruses like SARS-CoV-2. Despite extensive research on Cannabis sativa, other strains like C. indica require further study, particularly regarding their effects on phytopathogens and aquatic pathogens. The review calls for more research into untested Cannabis-derived compounds, the impact of environmental conditions on bioactive phytochemical production, and the potential applications of Cannabis in medicine, agriculture, and industry.
