TLDR The Brigham Eyebrow Tool for Alopecia is a simple and reliable way to measure eyebrow hair loss.
Three years ago, a study was conducted to develop and assess the reliability of the Brigham Eyebrow Tool for Alopecia (BETA), a tool designed to quantitatively evaluate eyebrow alopecia areata. The tool uses facial landmarks of eyebrow anatomy and is calculated using surface area and density. The study involved 50 eyebrow images with varying levels of hair loss, which were evaluated by six board-certified dermatologists at three academic medical centers. The BETA demonstrated high interrater and intrarater reliability, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranging from 0.88 to 0.91. The tool also showed sensitivity to changes in hair loss over time. The study concluded that BETA is a simple, reliable, and easy-to-use tool for assessing eyebrow alopecia areata, suitable for various clinical and research settings.
