TLDR Body and beard hair can be used for hair restoration in severely bald patients, but the technique is complex and costly.
The document from August 1, 2013, outlines a hair restoration technique that utilizes body and beard hair for patients with severe baldness who lack adequate scalp donor hair. This method is more complex and expensive than traditional follicular unit extraction (FUE) and requires specialized equipment and skills. The procedure involves extracting hair follicles with a rotary punch tool and transplanting them to the recipient areas on the head. Preoperative preparation includes using minoxidil and shaving the donor area. The maximum number of hairs transplanted per session is between 1500 and 1800, with postoperative care involving ointments and possibly oral antibiotics. Full healing is expected within 4 months, with optimal results at 10 months, and improvements can continue for up to 18 months. Complications can include transient paresis and hypopigmentation at the extraction site. The technique can significantly improve the aesthetic appearance of a bald scalp and camouflage prior surgical defects.
