TLDR Riceberry by-products may promote hair growth and skin pigmentation, useful for cosmetics.
The study investigated the bioactive compounds in riceberry broken rice (RBR) and crude riceberry rice oil (CRO), by-products of organic rice processing in Thailand. It found that the ethanolic extract of CRO had a higher gamma-oryzanol content (234 mg/100 g) compared to the aqueous extract of RBR (52.5 mg/100 g). Both extracts contained similar fatty acids, with oleic acid being the most prevalent. The RBR and CRO extracts showed significant tyrosinase-stimulating activities, 45% and 26% respectively, and RBR also demonstrated notable antioxidant activities. These findings suggested that the bioactive compounds in RBR and CRO could potentially promote hair growth and melanogenesis, making them valuable for cosmetic applications in hair products.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
