TLDR Sinseon-yukza-hwan shows strong antioxidant potential for hair and scalp cosmetics.
The study investigated the antioxidant activities of the ethanol extract of Shinsun-yukza-hwan (SSY), a Korean medicinal formula traditionally used for treating alopecia and gray hair. The research aimed to explore the potential of SSY as a natural antioxidant for use in hair and scalp-related cosmetics. The study measured total phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities. Results showed that SSY had significant antioxidant properties, with DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activities ranging from 20% to 85% and 10% to 58%, respectively, depending on the concentration. The reducing power of SSY was higher than that of BHA, a known antioxidant, indicating SSY's effectiveness in inhibiting free radical generation. The findings suggested that SSY could be a promising candidate for natural antioxidants in cosmetic applications.
