January 2017 in “대한본초학회지(본초분과학회지)” The study investigated the antioxidant potential of Sinseon-yukza-hwan (SSY), a Korean medicinal formula traditionally used for treating alopecia and gray hair. The 50% ethanol extract of SSY demonstrated significant antioxidative activity, with total polyphenol and flavonoid contents correlating strongly with its ability to scavenge free radicals. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities ranged from 20% to 85% and 10% to 58%, respectively, across different concentrations. SSY also showed a higher reducing power (79%) compared to BHA (65%). These findings suggested that SSY could be a promising natural antioxidant for use in hair and scalp-related cosmetics.
