TLDR The extract of Silybum marianum, Manganese PCA, and Lespedeza capitata can boost hair growth and extend the growth phase when combined in a serum.
The study evaluated the efficacy of three active ingredients - Silybum marianum extract (SME), Manganese PCA (MnPCA), and Lespedeza capitata extract (LCE) - on hair growth and anchorage markers in human hair follicle dermal papilla cells. SME was found to stimulate hair shaft anchorage by modulating keratin 75 and activating growth factor receptor signaling pathways. MnPCA induced the secretion of Versican and VEGF, and also increased Wnt/β catenin by 80%. LCE reduced DKK1 release by 72% and 5α-reductase activity by 60%. When these ingredients were combined in an anti-hair loss serum and tested on a human full-thickness scalp skin model, the serum stimulated hair shaft production by 102% and significantly prolonged the anagen phase by improving the hair cycle score and stimulating hair matrix keratinocytes proliferation. This suggests that SME, MnPCA, and LCE have complementary anti-hair loss properties and their combination in a serum can improve hair growth and prolong the anagen phase.
