Analyses of regenerative wave patterns in adult hair follicle populations reveal macro-environmental regulation of stem cell activity
January 2009
in “The International journal of developmental biology”
TLDR Hair follicle stem cells are controlled by their surrounding environment.
The study analyzed hair growth dynamics in adult mice, revealing that intra-follicular Wnt signaling oscillated synchronously with hair cycling, while dermal BMP signaling oscillated asynchronously. These interactions defined different phases in the hair cycle, with boundaries forming when anagen waves met refractory telogen follicles. Krt14-Nog mice showed altered wave dynamics and shortened refractory telogen. BMP-coated beads prevented hair wave propagation, suggesting that hair follicle stem cells are regulated by macro-environmental factors. This new understanding has significant implications for regenerative medicine and systems biology.
