TLDR Atopic dermatitis significantly increases the risk of alopecia areata, especially in children.
This study analyzed the epidemiology of alopecia areata and its association with atopic dermatitis in Moscow using data from 2020 to 2024. It found that alopecia areata is more prevalent in children (36.8/100,000) than adults (13.7/100,000), with a significant increase in overall morbidity and prevalence. The association between alopecia areata and atopic dermatitis was significant, particularly in children, where the frequency was 4.09% compared to 1.85% in adults. Atopic dermatitis was present in 15.9% of adults with alopecia areata. The study concludes that atopic dermatitis is a significant risk factor for alopecia areata, highlighting the importance of screening for atopy and adopting a multidisciplinary management approach.
