TLDR As women age, hair follicles decrease in number and hair width tends to reduce.
This study examined age-related morphological changes in the hair bulb and hair shaft in the parietal region of 80 women, divided into three age groups: 27 women aged around 27 years, 30 women aged around 47 years, and 23 women aged around 62 years. The findings revealed a significant decrease in the number of hair follicles with an internal root sheath as women age (p < 0.01), and a tendency for the width of the hair follicle and hair shaft to decrease, although this was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). These results contribute to the understanding of age-related changes in hair, providing valuable information for trichologists to develop clinical recommendations for preventing age-related alopecia areata.
