TLDR A man had a stroke after getting a scalp injection for hair loss.
In 2015, a 57-year-old man with a history of alopecia areata experienced an acute stroke and visual loss following a scalp injection of platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells for hair restoration. The injection was administered behind the hairline in the frontal scalp. Post-procedure, the patient suffered severe headaches, transient loss of consciousness, complete loss of vision in the left eye, and right-sided hemiparesis. An MRI revealed an acute stroke involving the left anterior cerebral artery (ACA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) territories. The patient also developed necrosis of the scalp in the territory of the left supratrochlear artery. The researchers suggested that the injected material, which included adipose tissue, might have caused embolic strokes due to reverse flow into the left supratrochlear artery, leading to occlusion of the left ophthalmic artery and migration into the left ACA and MCA territories.
