TLDR Finasteride overdose can cause acute pancreatitis.
A 32-year-old Iranian man developed acute pancreatitis after intentionally overdosing on 200 tablets of 5 mg finasteride, a drug commonly used for benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenetic alopecia. Despite no prior history of pancreatic disease, the patient exhibited severe symptoms and elevated pancreatic enzymes. Treatment with aggressive hydration and total parenteral nutrition led to significant improvement within three days. This rare case underscores the need for further research into the mechanisms and risk factors of finasteride-induced pancreatitis and suggests a potential reassessment of the drug's safety profile.
