TLDR The study created 3D-printed pills that effectively release a hair loss treatment drug over 24 hours.
This study developed and characterized 3D-printed pills incorporating Baricitinib (BAB) using polylactic acid (PLA) filaments through fused deposition modeling (FDM) to treat alopecia areata (AA). The pills, designed with a central hole to enhance drug release, were tested for drug encapsulation, release properties, and stability. Results showed drug release rates of 43.76% and 59.14% over 24 hours for 2% and 4% BAB concentrations, respectively, following the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. The study concluded that these 3D-printed pills could effectively deliver BAB with improved bioavailability and sustained release, offering a low-cost, personalized treatment option for AA.
