TLDR 17β-estradiol may help hair growth by increasing cannabinoid receptor type 1.
The study investigated the role of 17β-estradiol (E2) in human hair follicle (HF) growth and found that E2 up-regulated the expression of cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) in HF organ culture and outer root sheath (ORS) keratinocytes. This up-regulation suggested that E2 could increase HF sensitivity to the catagen-promoting effects of endocannabinoids, indicating a potential neuroendocrine regulatory mechanism. The findings proposed that combining topical E2 with a CB1 antagonist might improve the treatment of female pattern hair loss (FPHL).

Elevated bile acids can inhibit the enzyme AKR1C2, leading to increased DHT levels, which may accelerate hair loss in those predisposed to androgenetic alopecia. Treatments mentioned include topical minoxidil and finasteride.
