TLDR NGF and minoxidil promote hair growth, while 17 beta-E2 inhibits it.
The study observed the effects of NGF, estrogens, and minoxidil on human hair follicle growth in vitro. It found that 100 ng/ml NGF and 125 micrograms/ml minoxidil significantly increased hair follicle growth compared to the control, while 0.5 microgram/ml 17 beta-E2 significantly inhibited growth. Additionally, the combination of 100 ng/ml NGF and 0.5 microgram/ml 17 beta-E2 showed no significant difference in growth, indicating that NGF could neutralize the inhibitory effect of 17 beta-E2. The results were supported by the rates of DNA synthesis measured through 3H-TdR incorporation.
