    microscopic infectious agent that replicates inside living cells

    A virus is a microscopic infectious agent that can only replicate inside the living cells of an organism. It consists of genetic material (either DNA or RNA) encased in a protein coat, and sometimes an outer lipid envelope. Viruses can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea.
