    GlossaryHair Follicles

small skin structures from which hair grows

Hair follicles are small, tunnel-like structures in the skin from which hair grows. Each follicle anchors a single hair into the skin and is composed of several layers, including the bulb at the base where cells divide and grow to build the hair shaft. These structures also contain sebaceous glands that produce oil to condition the hair and skin.

research Hair Curvature: A Natural Dialectic and Review

28 citations , March 2014 in “Biological reviews/Biological reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society”
The document concludes that hair curvature can be explained by the growth patterns caused by the shape and separation of cells in the hair follicle and is affected by specific molecular pathways.

research Histological Structure of Sichuan Rabbit Fur and Skin in Different Procedures

January 2011 in “Leather Science and Engineering”
The study examined the histological structure of Sichuan rabbit skin through various processing stages, including soaking, dehairing, and tanning. It found that rabbit fur had a unique structure, with long, pliable hairs growing in clusters from single follicles and fine collagen fibers aligned parallel to the surface. Elastic fibers were more abundant near the surface, while muscles, sebaceous glands, and adipose cells were sparse. Processing affected the skin's structure: dehairing removed fur and opened collagen fibers, increasing porosity, while oil tanning and polymetallic retanning tightened the collagen fibers and reduced porosity.
