    GlossaryEpidermis (skin layer)

outermost skin layer providing protection against environmental factors

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, serving as a protective barrier against environmental factors such as pathogens, UV radiation, and physical injury. It is composed of multiple layers of cells, primarily keratinocytes, which undergo a continuous process of renewal and shedding. This layer also contains melanocytes, which produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color.
