    GlossaryCell Membrane

thin barrier controlling substance movement in and out of cells

The cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane or plasmalemma, is a thin, flexible barrier that surrounds the cell, providing structure and protection. It is composed of a double layer of lipids (lipid bilayer) with embedded proteins, which control the movement of substances in and out of the cell, thus maintaining the internal environment and facilitating communication with other cells.
