    GlossaryHypertrophic Scars

raised, thickened skin areas from excessive collagen after injury

Hypertrophic scars are raised, thickened areas of skin that form at the site of an injury or incision. Unlike keloid scars, which can grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound, hypertrophic scars remain confined to the wound area but can be red, itchy, and sometimes painful. They result from an overproduction of collagen during the healing process and can improve over time, though treatments like silicone sheets, corticosteroid injections, or laser therapy may be used to reduce their appearance.
