Keratin 1 (KRT1) is a type of protein found in the outer layer of the skin, playing a crucial role in providing structural integrity and resilience. It partners with Keratin 10 to form intermediate filaments, which help skin cells withstand mechanical stress and prevent damage. Mutations in the KRT1 gene can lead to skin disorders such as epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, characterized by blistering and thickened skin.
