TLDR Oral vitamin D treatment can help some children with alopecia areata who have vitamin D deficiency.
The study investigated the relationship between vitamin D levels and alopecia areata (AA) in children, and the efficacy of oral vitamin D treatment in those with vitamin D deficiency. It included 30 newly diagnosed AA patients and 30 controls. Initial 25(OH)D levels were similar between patients and controls. After six months of oral vitamin D treatment, both groups showed significant increases in 25(OH)D and calcium levels. Notably, 47% of AA patients with vitamin D deficiency experienced complete improvement. The study concluded that while there was no significant difference in vitamin D levels between AA patients and controls, oral vitamin D treatment could benefit selected AA patients with vitamin D deficiency.
