TLDR Researchers established normal hair and scalp characteristics for healthy women using trichoscopy.
In 2009, researchers conducted a study on 60 healthy females, aged 19 to 64, to standardize trichoscopy and establish norms for measurable parameters. They used the Fotofinder II device and MoleAnalyzer software to assess hair and scalp characteristics in four scalp locations. The study found mean hair thickness varied by scalp area, with the thickest hair in the frontal area and the thinnest in the occipital area. Norms were set for mean hair thickness and the percentage of pilosebaceous units with single hair in different scalp areas. Additionally, the study identified two types of blood vessels and noted that certain features like white dots and perifollicular discoloration, which were thought to indicate hair pathology, could also be present in healthy individuals. These findings provided a baseline for clinicians to differentiate between normal and abnormal scalp conditions using trichoscopy.
