TLDR Combining minoxidil and plant extracts improved hair growth in a boy with a rare genetic disorder.
This case report details the treatment of an 8-year-old boy with hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp (HSS), a rare genetic disorder, using a combination of minoxidil and botanical extracts. The patient, with a CDSN gene mutation, showed a 70% improvement in hair growth after 6 months of treatment. This is the first documented case of HSS symptom improvement with oral botanical extracts, suggesting a new therapeutic approach. The study also indicates the potential involvement of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in hair follicle regeneration, though further research is needed. The patient's family history and genetic testing were key in diagnosing HSS, and treatment was adjusted after a COVID-19 infection worsened hair loss.
