TLDR PLX, a tomato extract mix, may help treat prostate issues like BPH.
The study investigated the effects of PLX, a mixture of tomato extract (including 2% lycopene) and chitooligosaccharide, on prostate cancer cells and testosterone-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Sprague Dawley rats. The research found that PLX decreased cell viability in L929 and LNCaP cell lines at certain concentrations and inhibited the expression of prostatic specific antigen (PSA) and 5α-reductase genes. In vivo, PLX reduced prostate weight in rats with induced BPH, suggesting its potential as an effective 5α-reductase inhibitor for treating BPH. The study compared PLX's effects to finasteride, a known BPH treatment, and found similar reductions in prostate weight.
