TLDR Thymol-loaded nanoparticles are a promising, natural treatment for acne that avoids antibiotics and preserves healthy skin bacteria.
The document presents a study on Thymol-loaded PLGA nanoparticles (TH-NP) as a potential treatment for acne. Thymol, a natural compound with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, was encapsulated in nanoparticles smaller than 200 nm. These nanoparticles showed potent antimicrobial activity against Cutibacterium acnes, a bacteria involved in acne development, with minor effects on Staphylococcus epidermis, a bacterium found on healthy skin. The TH-NP demonstrated a slow, sustained release of Thymol and were highly retained inside the skin, specifically penetrating the hair follicle. The study also found that TH-NP were not cytotoxic at concentrations up to 50 µg/mL and reduced the amount of reactive oxygen species generated, indicating antioxidant activity. The study concluded that Thymol-loaded PLGA nanoparticles could be a promising and efficient approach for acne treatment.
