TLDR Testosterone boosts fluid and electrolyte secretion in seminal vesicles, aiding sperm function.
This study investigated the effects of testosterone on the expression of cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR), adenylate cyclase (AC), and cAMP levels in the seminal vesicles of orchidectomized rats. The research found that testosterone treatment increased the levels of CFTR, AC, and cAMP, which are associated with the secretion of chloride and bicarbonate-rich fluid in the seminal vesicles. Higher doses of testosterone (250 μg/kg/day) resulted in greater increases compared to lower doses (125 μg/kg/day). The study also noted that the inhibitory effects of flutamide or finasteride were more pronounced at higher testosterone doses. These findings suggested that testosterone plays a significant role in regulating fluid and electrolyte secretion in the seminal vesicles, potentially impacting sperm activation and survival.
