TLDR Testosterone raises blood pressure and changes kidney protein levels.
The study investigated the effects of testosterone on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and the expression of various aquaporins (AQP-1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7) in the kidneys of orchidectomized adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Testosterone treatment increased MAP and the levels of AQP-1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 proteins and mRNA, while decreasing AQP-3 levels. These effects were counteracted by flutamide and finasteride. The distribution of AQPs was specific to kidney regions, with AQP-1 and 7 in the proximal convoluted tubule and AQP-2, 3, 4, and 6 in the collecting ducts. The findings suggested that testosterone-induced increases in AQP expression could enhance water reabsorption, leading to higher blood pressure.
