Targeting Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Using Selective Photothermolysis with 595 nm Pulsed Dye Laser: Outcomes of 1080 Cases

    Image of study
TLDR 595 nm pulsed dye laser is a cost-effective treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancer with a low recurrence rate.
The document reports on a retrospective case series summarizing the outcomes of 1080 cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), treated with 595 nm pulsed dye laser (PDL) from 2008 to 2016. The study included 535 men and 543 women, with 642 cases of BCC and 437 cases of SCC. The primary outcome was the recurrence of carcinoma, with a mean follow-up period of 24 months. The combined recurrence rate for BCC and SCC was 11.2%, with BCC having a weighted recurrence rate of 12.1% and SCC having a recurrence rate of 8.2%. The mean charge per treatment was $166, which is significantly lower than other treatment options. The study suggests that 595 nm PDL is a cost-effective treatment for NMSC with a lower recurrence rate compared to previous smaller case reports, and it should be considered as a treatment option by dermatologists.
