TLDR Superficial cryotherapy is effective and safe for treating alopecia areata, especially eyebrow hair loss.
The study "Superficial Cryotherapy, Does It Work In Alopecia Areata?" evaluated the efficacy of superficial cryotherapy, specifically using liquid nitrogen, in treating various subtypes of alopecia areata, including mild, moderate, recalcitrant alopecia areata, and alopecia totalis. The treatment was found to be effective and safe, particularly for alopecia areata of the eyebrows. It was nearly as effective as topical steroids and topical PUVA therapy and showed increased efficacy when combined with topical immunotherapy and topical steroids. The procedure is well-tolerated, convenient, and particularly suitable for children who are susceptible to side effects of other treatments. Reported side effects, such as vesiculation, erosion, crust formation, transient pigmentary alteration, and partial leukotrichia, were transient. The main mechanisms of efficacy in alopecia areata are vascular changes and immunomodulation.
