TLDR Licorice extract hair tonics are effective and safe for hair growth, except for mild eye irritation at the lowest concentration.
The study evaluated the safety, physical stability, and hair growth activity of hair tonics containing ethanol extract of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn.) at concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. The hair growth activity was tested on rabbits, showing that 5% and 10% licorice extract tonics had hair growth effects comparable to or better than 2% minoxidil. The tonics demonstrated good physical stability across various temperatures. Safety tests indicated no skin irritation, though the 2.5% licorice tonic caused mild eye irritation. Overall, the licorice ethanol extract hair tonics were effective and safe for topical use, except for the mild eye irritation observed with the 2.5% concentration.
