TLDR Stem cells help control the immune response to improve wound healing.
Luan et al. reveal that epidermal stem cells are vital in wound healing by regulating the immune response. In a mouse model, hair follicle stem cells expressing CD80 are crucial for recruiting regulatory T (Treg) cells and controlling neutrophil activity. Lack of CD80 results in delayed healing, excessive neutrophils, and insufficient Treg cells. The study underscores CD80's role in Treg cell induction and immune balance, suggesting stem cells actively influence their immune environment during wound repair, which could lead to new therapeutic strategies for improving healing.
