TLDR Thyroid disorders can cause skin issues in children, so early detection and screening are important.
This scoping review examines the connection between thyroid disorders and skin conditions in pediatric patients, emphasizing the "thyroid-skin axis" where thyroid hormones affect skin processes like keratinocyte proliferation and hair growth. Common skin issues linked to thyroid dysfunction include chronic urticaria, vitiligo, and alopecia, which may signal underlying endocrine problems. Early detection of these dermatological signs is crucial for timely diagnosis and personalized treatment of thyroid disorders, which might initially be asymptomatic. The review calls for regular screening for endocrine dysfunction in children with these skin conditions and highlights the need for further research to understand the mechanisms of the thyroid-skin relationship and improve management strategies.
