TLDR Curcuma aeruginosa extract lotion effectively reduces underarm hair growth.
In 2018, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted on 30 women aged between 20 and 52 years to investigate the effects of a high sesquiterpene Curcuma aeruginosa extract (CA-ext) on axillary hair growth. The study lasted for 12 weeks, during which the participants applied either CA-ext or a placebo to their armpits twice daily. The results showed a 22% reduction in axillary hair growth with CA-ext compared to the placebo, although this effect was delayed by 6 weeks. Participants reported having shorter and finer armpit hair with the test lotion but disliked its smell. No adverse effects were reported, and the lotion was well accepted. The study concluded that CA-ext in lotion is an effective inhibitor of axillary hair growth and could provide an alternative treatment for unwanted androgenic hair.
