TLDR Maxillariinae orchids contain 62 compounds with potential health benefits, including treating skin conditions and diseases like cancer and diabetes.
The review paper "Active Compounds with Medicinal Potential Found in Maxillariinae Benth. (Orchidaceae Juss.) Representatives" discusses the medicinal potential of the Maxillariinae subtribe of orchids. Despite being one of the largest taxa within the orchid family, only 19 species have been investigated for their chemical composition, producing 62 semiochemicals with potential medical applications. These compounds have a range of therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, analgesic, antioxidant, and antidiabetic effects. One compound, 2.7,9-Di-tert-butyl-1-oxaspiro(4,5)deca-6,9-diene-2,8-dione, is used to treat skin conditions including hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, acne, and seborrhea in females and male pattern baldness. The study concludes that Maxillariinae representatives are a promising source of biologically active compounds with medical potential, warranting further research.
