TLDR Hirsute women have higher testosterone, cholesterol, and glucose levels.
The study conducted in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, evaluated serum testosterone, cholesterol, and plasma glucose concentrations in 100 women, divided equally into bearded (hirsute) and non-bearded groups. Results indicated a significant increase in serum cholesterol levels in bearded women compared to non-bearded women, while testosterone and glucose levels were higher in the bearded group but not significantly so. The findings suggested that hirsutism in women might be linked to endocrine abnormalities, potentially leading to increased risks of hypertestosteronemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyperglycemia, which could predispose them to cardiovascular diseases and insulin resistance.
