TLDR Hyaluronic acid injections can improve mouth opening and quality of life in scleroderma patients.
This interventional study evaluated the use of hyaluronic acid (Profhilo®) injections to treat microstomia in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Fourteen patients received the first injection, and 11 received the second. The study found a significant increase in oral opening from a mean of 31.6 mm to 35.8 mm two months after the second injection. Quality of life improvements were also noted, assessed via the modified Rodnan Skin Score and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index. The results suggest that hyaluronic acid injections can significantly improve oral opening and quality of life in SSc patients.
