TLDR Repeated use of protein hair conditioner with heat or gamma irradiation can harm skin and hair health in rats.
The study aimed to evaluate the impact of heat and gamma irradiation on skin hygiene after applying a protein hair conditioner to 96 albino rats, divided into eight groups with equal numbers of males and females. The rats were treated with conditioner one to three times, followed by exposure to hot air or gamma irradiation. Results showed that repeated treatments led to alopecia and skin ulcers, a decrease in serum collagen I levels, an increase in heat shock protein concentrations, and inconsistent changes in vascular endothelial growth factor levels. Histopathological analysis supported these findings. The study concluded that no protein hair conditioner products are entirely safe and suggested reconsidering the use of such treatments due to their cumulative risks.
