Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), also known as IgA vasculitis, is a condition that causes inflammation and bleeding in the small blood vessels, primarily affecting the skin, joints, intestines, and kidneys. It is characterized by a distinctive purplish rash, often on the lower legs and buttocks, abdominal pain, and joint inflammation. The exact cause is unknown, but it often follows an upper respiratory infection and involves the deposition of IgA immune complexes in the affected tissues.
