TLDR Effective treatments for discoid lupus erythematosus are needed, as current options are unsatisfactory and off-label.
This scientometric study analyzed 1,239 publications on discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) to assess research trends and characteristics. Dermatologists contributed to 60% of the papers and 77 of the top 100 most-cited papers, reflecting their central role in diagnosing and treating DLE. The study highlighted a shift in research focus post-2005 towards drug safety and withdrawal, with increased attention on drugs like tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil. Despite the prevalence of DLE, no drugs are specifically approved for its treatment, and current therapies are often off-label and unsatisfactory. The study underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and large-scale clinical trials to develop effective treatments.
